David Gommon British ArtistWelcome to the official David Gommon website. David Gommon was a twentieth century British painter born in Battersea, South London.

As a young man he began his exploration of place in his native Battersea, painting the streets he knew well, but Battersea Park, his first experience of arcadia did not feature in his work until the 1960’s, when he painted ‘Battersea Park, men watching cricket’.

David Gommon was actively painting all his life, with the exception of a brief period during the second world war. He remains one of the most prolific painters of his era. In his twenties he became one of Lucy Carrington Wertheims Twenties Group, and it was through her encouragement that he gained early recognition.

The images in the gallery cannot fully do justice to the paintings themselves, but they do show the scope and breadth of his work, and we hope that through contacts who visit the site an opportunity will arise to hold a retrospective with a wide range of his work on show.

The intention of the website is to allow his work to be enjoyed by a wider audience, and to be seen as part of the vigorous British art scene which flourished in the C20th, and to make contact with collectors and institutions who have paintings that are not listed here. .
